Under the guidance of professional musicians and mentors, Belongó's Fat Cats students explore improvisation, ensemble playing, composition, and the traditions of Afro Latin jazz through a rigorous and joyful educational environment rooted in collaboration and creativity. This performance offers audiences an opportunity to experience the energy, discipline, and imagination these young artists bring to the stage as they perform a repertoire inspired by Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz traditions. Founded in 2010 at the legendary Fat Cat jazz club, the Fat Cats program has helped shape hundreds of emerging artists through performance-based jazz education and mentorship. Alumni have gone on to attend leading conservatories, perform professionally, and contribute to music communities across New York City and beyond.
